When we speak of sustainable design, it is important to define what it is we mean to sustain. The natural environment is one important answer, but others - communities, health and well being, morality and ethics - lead us to a richer vision of the built environment. My work investigates the layering of new technologies and production methods with traditional materials and forms, adding the richness of cultural experience and memory to our interactions with unfamiliar new environments. I believe that through sensitive and artful employment of sustainable design strategies, designers can inspire and influence the larger public to rethink their own relationships with the natural environment and their responsibilities as members of a larger community and ecosystem.
